Certainly no shortage of reports, spin and observations coming from our own mainstream media, I thought I would take a look and see how the rest of the world was reacting to the news of the bin Laden death.

And of course, there was plenty (and still is). Like all the news today, it's coming thick and fast and the observations are running the gamut.

Starting off this roundup of news reports and reactions, I'm beginning with the first hour of BBC Radio 4's Today Program which featured initial reactions and reports, as the attack on the Bin Laden compound took place only three hours earlier. It's the player at the top.

Quickly followed by a Special program from the BBC Asian Service, getting reaction from members of the Asian community around London and updating the initial news reports.

Shortly after the BBC reports are three news bulletins from Radio Pakistan (might as well check out the source) beginning with the 12:00 noon news. There was no mention on the 8:00 news so it wasn't included.

Next up is a special program from Radio Pakistan on the bin Laden news - this one is in Urdu and was aired shortly after the initial reports.

From Radio Algeria comes their Morning News, this time in French and it seems to have not been as big a deal in Algeria as one would imagine, since the hour newscast was mostly taken up with Football news (which was cut out). Different strokes . . .

And finally, ABC Radio National in Australia devoted the first third of their Late Night Live Program to the events of the day, with several interviews and reports.

A very busy day which is pretty far from over. But these are the initial reports and observations during the first few hours after President Obama's official announcement.

After fourteen hours of sifting, listening and editing you get some idea how the rest of the world was reacting to the news. Relief, optimism and caution - and that nagging feeling we haven't heard the end of it yet.

And of course, if this kind of over-the-top wrapup appeals to you, by all means,

Do those Navy Seals get to divvy up the $50,000,000 reward; "dead or alive"?

No

But they will get a huge signing bonus when they get out of the Navy and go to Xe/Blackwater for their next gig.

Intelligent people respect the strength and brilliance of President Obama and not the habitual weakness of Reslugs.

It is now being reported that Osama bin Laden's code name by the Special Ops team sent to capture/kill him was 'Geronimo'. I find this not only highly insensitive to Native Americans who have fought, died and continue to fight in our armed services with distinction, honor and selfless bravery as an affront to the good name of Goyaałé (Geronimo) a true warrior and leader of the Apache Nation who never stooped to the level of cowardice even, in the face of genocide, demonstrated by the sloth and self aggrandizement of that loathsome, yellow Osama bin Laden.

If the Special Ops team were seeking a name apropos of a coward why not code name '5 Deferment Cheney'?

Maybe they didn't want to get confused over the name of a murderer and the name of an Al Quaida leader?

OBL was unarmed, unless you consider his walking cane a weapon, gave no resistence and was shot in the head,twice.....they had him alive, and shot him in the head twice.....so,did the U.S. need a revenge fix,or if alive the truth about many things would come bubbling up ,and the lies we have been fed would bring down this house of cards known as the united states?........sure sounds like a rallying point for a billion or so muslims.MIC and congress/media complex are doing just fine...i'm already against the next war, hell this blood lust makes me think i should put all my money into 'defense' company stocks....we have become the biggest, baddest bully the world has ever known......so,we're number one?

....the fools do not realize,a population that can ,..... not paticipate .............in the 'economy'...,can not keep it viable!..........."we are listening,.......and we're not blind.,......this is your life....this is your time."

Yup

We've overtaken China and Israel long ago. And keeping Bin Laden alive would have been a lightning rod, there is no way he was going to be taken alive. Dead men tell no tales

"The most striking contradiction between the official US propaganda about the “war on terror” and the reality demonstrated in the raid is the location of bin Laden’s hiding place. Far from being holed up in a cave, isolated from the world, the Al Qaeda leader was in a palatial compound in Abbottabad only half a mile from the Pakistan Military Academy, the equivalent of West Point, in a city which is home to many high-ranking retired military officers."

and they go on to say:

"n perhaps the most remarkable passage in Obama’s Sunday night speech, he recounted giving the order to incoming CIA Director Leon Panetta, in January 2009, to make finding and disposing of bin Laden the agency’s number one priority. The obvious implication—almost ignored in the US media—is that under the Bush administration, targeting bin Laden was NOT a priority.

This only raises further questions about the longstanding connections between bin Laden and US intelligence agencies, since he got his early training in terrorist methods as a CIA contractor in the mujahideen war against the Soviet Army in Afghanistan in the 1980s. No serious analysis of the 9/11 attacks can avoid the conclusion that sections of the US intelligence apparatus protected the Al Qaeda operatives and looked the other way as the plot unfolded."
