Coming as a shock, and amidst an ever-rising tidal wave of anger and disgust, News Of The World decided to shut it's doors and publish its last edition this coming Sunday. After 168 years, it comes down to this.

The ever-deepening scandal currently overtaking Newscorp and News International is now taking on the appearance of shell game. Attempt to find the elusive pea while fighting distractions from hands.

As it was reported on this edition of PM from BBC Radio 4, news was swift and abrupt. A short, terse statement from James Murdoch, son and heir-apparent expressed remorse and regret, while former Editor and now Chief Executive of News International Rebekah Brooks took the life preservers and split out the back, leaving colleagues and staff abruptly unemployed and drowning. As PM Anchor Eddie Mair asked "Are you rejoicing?" the answer came back ultimately no. Or as Michael Wolff pointed out "Rupert Murdoch is now naked and scared".

The question now is, what next? It would seem shutting News Of The World was a maladroit attempt at damage control - the out-of-sight/out-of-mind analogy, but I think it has gone way too far for that. The damage is still being revealed, the guilt is slowly making its way up the ladder. As was pointed out in the broadcast, Prime Minister David Cameron is now in a very precarious position because of his personal relationships with both Murdoch and Brooks, appointing disgraced (and now possibly jailed) Andy Coulson to Communications Director and facing the looming issue of the proposed buyout of BskyB by Newscorp.Questions are now coming to light as to just how much Cameron knew about Coulson and how much he chose not to know at the time of his appointment. But as was also pointed out, this scandal has repercussions all over Parliament because of the nature of Politics and the Press, not only the immense damage that has been done to Scotland Yard.

But this is what's currently going on in the UK only. That's all we're hearing about for now. The subject of just how widespread this system of hacking has been with any other publications, or news outlets currently owned by Newscorp throughout the world begs a much more alarming question. If this has been company policy, it's highly unlikely this scandal is confined to one newspaper in one area alone. Think cockroaches.

It's just speculation at this point and as I said yesterday, this story is far from over.

But for now, here is the July7th edition of PM, followed by another BBC Profile. This time it's the elusive Rebekah Brooks.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Not soon enough!

King of all information. Yeah, I know, it just looks like a flat tire, but don't be so sure you didn't bend something expensive in the suspension or steering after hitting that pothole. I sure hope so.

BTW, that passive phrase: "mistakes were made" is not a suitable substitute for "we illegally eavesdropped on fellow citizens." When you finally get to prison, the big boys will definitely notice your unwillingness to step up. Don't drop the soap...

Oh no it's not! Maybe you should go over to to Daily Kos where they are reporting that shares in News Corp have gone down 4.1 percent on the NASDAQ stock exchange as of 1630 GMT. It has shed More than 7 percent since Tuesday, slashing the Company's market capitalization by more than three billion dollars.

In addition many of the people let go from News of the World were not around when the original scandal broke, leading to some acrimony between them and Rebekah Brooks. Especially after it became clear that she would keep her job, while they lost theirs. As one employee told her: "Can't you see that by your actions yesterday, your calling our newspaper toxic, we have all been contaminated by that toxicity by the way we've been treated.

"But can't you see the bigger picture? You're making the whole of News International toxic, and there's an arrogance there that you think we'd want to work for you again."

Mrs Brooks replied that there was "no arrogance coming from this standpoint".

Sure there isn't. Just like Rupert plays as Santa Claus at Macy's during Christmas. Does anyone believe that one?

Oh, and get this. Even though there are calls from the PM on down for her resignation, what was here reaction? "If being betrayed is a resignation issue then maybe I've read it wrong, but I think I'm much more useful leading this company through this." Class act that lady.

Also, USA Today reported on deletion of millions of E-mails in an effort to hinder Scotland Yard's investigation as well as more revelations to come.

For more info I would suggest taking a look at Daily Kos's Murdoch Empire has Lost 3 Billion Dollars in past 48 Hours UPDATED x1

But this is not the same old, same old. This has the potential to be huge.

This was clearly an isolated incident caused by a bad apple lone gunman on the staff of Murdoch's paper, and not indicative of any culture or pattern of bad behavior. Nothing to see here. Besides, this apparently has nothing to do with Casey Anthony. Therefore, since the MSM seems unable to cover more than one story at a time, we'll hear nothing about this except from those liberals at MSNBC who cannot seem to get aboard the Casey Anthony train like the good little mouthpieces at the other 24 hour news networks.

Someone in Congress should start mentioning that it would not be irresponsible to start an investigation into the Murdock news/media Empire in America to be sure that in fact there was no similar hacking in the US as has now been exposed int UK. A congressional investigation would certainly be appropriate to see if any America Laws have been broken. In fact it appears that James Murdock is in peril with the law in the United States. Will a member of congress step forward and propose an investigation agaisnt Fox News to be sure that Ailes and company are not carrying on similar nefarious activity against the American public???

You can safely bet that it's been going on here. And you can double down on the fact that the NSA / DHS / CIA and every other alphabet agency knows all about it, and it will therefore never be investigated.

Think building 7.

Humpty Dumpty was pushed.

Ape-Man's picture

I wonder if Murdoch and son own the NSA/DHS/CIA and FBI too.

The Murdochs basically own the papers and airwaves in the UK and the USA, but would the national security services be comfortable with Rupert Murdoch being captain of their 'TopSail' ship?

Because of that pesky language barrier. In Australia they speak Australian, in Britain they speak British and in Murka they speak Murkan. Besides, that mole that Dubya planted for Rupy in the DHS bugging dept makes it all nice and legal like here. I blame sharia law because it would be irresponsible of me not to.

Ape-Man's picture

Oh that's right. They don't tolerate things like this in the UK, but then they're not a third world banana republic like the US is becoming, are they?

This sounds more like crisis capitalism than a mea culpa. The New York Times reported that Murdock was planning on merging the operations of News of the World and The Sun to cut costs. All this did was speed up the timetable and blunt criticism about firing workers in harsh times...

It's always win-win when you're a Murdoch.

Yes, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. In the middle of a major scandal is not the way to do it. The outrage in Britain is white hot right now and isn't going down.

jimbo92107's picture

Looks like Rupert took the FBI route under J. Edgar Hoover. Collect enough fat folders, bug enough phones and online accounts, and look how powerful you can become in a short time.

This should start an investigation into the bugging and hacking done in the US by Murdoch's minions. Is Obama beholden to Rupert? He can prove he's not by asking Eric Holder to investigate how Murdoch's monkeys do their dirty work. Betcha there's an even bigger scandal waiting to hatch right here.

regulararmyfool's picture

I will bet $100 against $5, that all of the files from the NoTW are in a third country landfill within 2 months.

No records, no prosecutions. No prosecutions, Murdoch will get the OK to buy the rest of Sky with the help of all of his British political pals.

Simple enough?

All of the events above were front page events at FOX, The New York Post, and The Wall Street Journal. I'm not saying that Newscorp employees actually broke into the cell phones or private email accounts to leak data. But. We'd be naive, even stupid, not to launch an investigation of our own.

Perhaps the reason that FOX News were such strong advocates of the Patriot Act, is because the wiretapping clause so closely represents their own journalistic policies.

Somebody needs to proofread your articles before the authors hit "send".

This is an important story, but a submission full of errors doesn't help to adequately convey the intended message.

We know Fox is not beholden to facts, and that there is literally no depth to which they won't stoop to push their agenda and drive up their ratings.
