Here we are, smack in the middle of the 2010 Winter Olympics. What better reason then that to take a look at an Olympic scandal just before the 1994 Winter Olympics? The Nancy Kerrigan/Tony Harding assault scandal. Two aspiring skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan were on the U.S. team, hoping for Olympic Gold heading for Lillehammer. During a training session in a Detroit rink on January 6, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a then unknown assailant, leaving her injured and raising questions with officials whether she could compete or not.
The story was shocking and it quickly unraveled. Within days arrests were made and fingers started pointing in the direction of team mate Tonya Harding. Over the next several weeks the story played out like a bad episode of Gerry Springer. Harding was kicked off the team but threatened a lawsuit and was reinstated. She would wind up finishing 8th while Kerrigan, still recovering from her injuries, finished 2nd to win Silver. Eventually Harding would confess to having masterminded the attack and she was banned from future skating.
But from January 7 to the 28th, the scandal was lead story on most newscasts, with the exception of the bitter cold snap in the east and the Earthquake in Los Angeles. Still, America loves a good trainwreck.

Here is a compressed rundown from January 6-28 as the events unfolded.
The republican that harding is or was even if she didn't know it.
She followed all the republican principles. 1. Win at any cost. 2. Lie to your opponet and everyone else. 3. Cause bodily injuries if needed to get what you want.
republicans are over grown children. They have never become adults. Most of them will never become adults. They do not have the morals or the intelligence to make sound rational decisions and should not be allowed to hold any position where their decisions effect others.
republicanism/conservatism is a menatl illness and it has almost killed America!
Harding was a great skater. Very athletic. She could have beaten Kerrigan (though probably not Michelle Kwan who actually won the trials but was denied a spot on the team because of her age.)
skating. I remember that it was the thing at the time to make fun and do impressions of Nancy's famous "Whyyyyy meeeee!" knee clutch. Kids are mean, what can I say?
Hopefully these two can maybe patch things up since Tonya has been reaching out to Nancy after the horrible incident with Nancy's father and brother...

because Harding has a book coming out, but she seemed sincere to me.
Seems like the book will have some dirty laundry. She says that she was raped to force her to keep quiet about the attack on Nancy.

She beat up one of her ex-boy friends with a tire iron. I've always wondered why she didn't just do the Kerrigan hit herself.
Having said that, the entire Kerrigan v Harding fiasco made a joke out of the 1994 Olympics.
It wasn't a tire iron, it was a hubcap.
I was always amazed at Hardings thighs. I think she could have crushed a bowling ball between them.
I certainly do admire women like that.
If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

Sounds like she ought to find "family values" and then either run as a GOPer or get a gig on Fox (is there a difference?).
The Tonya Harding thing was a good metaphor for the Repug sweep of that very same year. White trash assholes can't win in a real competition, so they use the winner as their own personal punching bag to compensate for their short-comings. The worst part was the media ghouls exploited Kerrigan's agony, and let Harding slide. When you think about it, this was the real prelude to Gitmo.
Oh, how I wish this blogger were correct and eventually Tonya admitted to have masterminded the attack on Nancy.
BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE! Tonya always maintained that all she did was thwart the investigation into her husband and his henchmen. And that's all she pleaded to, all she was sentenced for.
I believe she was totally in on the whole scheme and wanted to eliminate Nancy first from the Nationals and then the Olympics. So she won the Nationals but wouldn't have beaten Oksana Baiul either.
Their greatly anticipated and watched showdown in Lillehammer featured Nancy's triumph and Tonya's crying to the judges over her bootlace. While athletic and an impressive jumper, Tonya never had the grace and balletic quality of Nancy's skating. She was always tacky and immediately suspect in my mind after the assault.
Her subsequent behavior is all in character.
Hey, Tonya is our very own here in the Pacific NW. And I don't think she was in on the whole thing. She was abused as a child and married to an abuser. He hit her during the marriage sold their wedding night sex tape to the tabloids, went to jail, changed his name when he got out, remarried and abused wife #2, divorced, threatened to kill her in front of their kids, married again and dropped out sight.
Tonya has been in trouble on and off, as well. But she always maintained that she didn't know about the plot til afterward and I believe her.
Arrghh! My bad! That's what happens when you try and multi-task. I was digitizing a Gerald Ford press conference and writing up this post at the same time and got my Gerry/Jerry's mixed up!
