Over to Paris this week for a concert by Orchestre de Paris, conducted by Alain Altinoglu and featuring Pianist Romain Descharmes in a program of music by Chabrier, Saint-Saens and Florent Schmitt.

The venerable war-horse Espana by Emmanuel Chabrier opens the concert, followed by a wildly well-received Saint-Saens Piano concerto Number 2, with Pianist Romain Descharmes, who follows with two encores. The concert concludes with the seldom heard (at least here in the U.S.) La Tragèdie de Salomè by the early 20th century composer Florent Schmitt.

A good concert of mostly familiar music done as only a French orchestra can.

The concert is broken up between two players - the Chabrier and the Saint-Saens (and encores) are on the top player and the Schmitt is on the bottom player.

For you note takers:

16 mai 2012

Enjoy.

Something special again this week. Even the announcer at Radio France Musique said so.

L.A.'s very own (we like to think so) Gustavo Dudamel leading Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in an all-Brahms program (Symphony Number 3 and Symphony Number 1). Recorded live last week as it was happening, it's further evidence that Gustavo Dudamel is one of the greats and the brightest light to come along in a very long time.

The program is broken up between two players. The top player is the Brahms 3rd Symphony and the bottom player is the Brahms 1st Symphony. Announcements are in French and the audience is bonkers.

Here's the program:

Brahms:
Symphonie n°3 en fa majeur Op.90 (1883)
1- Allegro con brio
2- Andante
3- Poco allegretto
4- Allegro

Symphonie n°1 en ut mineur Op.68 (1876)
1- Poco sostenuto - Allegro
2- Andante sostenuto
3- Poco allegretto e grazioso

Gustavo Dudamel, Direction

Enjoy and see a live concert at some point soon.

Back over to the French Radio transcriptions this weekend for a performance by Gaby Casadesus and the Pascal String Quartet of music of the legendary French Pianist Robert Casadesus.

This weekend it's his Quintet for Piano and String Quartet from this circa 1958 Studio Broadcast performance.

The legendary Pianist and interpreter of other composer's works was a composer of note himself as this piece will attest.

Back over to the Radio Transcriptions of Radio France this week. A radio studio recording circa 1957 (no exact dates on the labels, I'm sorry to say) by The Parrenin String Quartet playing the music of 20th century composer Jean-Louis Martinet.

His Variations For String Quartet written in 1946. The Parrenin Quartet were one of the pioneering performing ensembles in France in the 1950's and 1960's. I am not sure they recorded this work commercially and I highly doubt this broadcast recording has been available in any form.

Like a lot of contemporary music from this period, it can take some getting used to. Not helped is the fact the original discs were damaged in spots with some pretty nasty scratches to contend with, and I'm not certain if this piece has gotten much in the way of exposure since it's 1946 premier. Suffice to say Martinet was a prolific composer who only died two years ago (at the age of 98) and had been active for a very long time and made a substantial contribution to the music world.

Not all listening is easy the first time around, but if you stick it out, the benefits can be substantial.

And so ends the weekend.

Something out of the ordinary, delayed-broadcast earlier today from a concert given on January 12th featuring the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France playing music of Edgar Varese and Pink Floyd.

Deserts by Edgar Varese and Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd. I told you it was unusual.

The Orchestra is led by Pierre-Andre Valade in the Varese and Jean-Jacques Justafre in the Pink Floyd.

I've split the concert up between three players with the second (or middle) player featuring an interview with Ron Geesin who provided the original orchestra scoring for the album as well as the 2008 revision and is featured on Piano during this concert.

Needless to say, the audience is enthusiastic and even the folks at Radio France Musique are having a good time.

Here's the rundown for the program:

mercredi 7 mars 2012

14h36

(2nd Player) Interview de Ron Geesin par Didier Varrod

14h51

(3rd player)Pink Floyd
Atom Heart Mother**, Version révisée par Ron Geesin (2008)

Ron Geesin, Composition et piano
Jean-Claude Auclin, Violoncelle
Serge Munuera, Orgue Hammond
Amaury Filliard, Guitare électrique
Philippe Chayeb, Guitare basse électrique
Claude Salmieri, Batterie

I think this is one of those concerts you'll want to play loud. Just sayin'.

Anti-Road Rage nonetheless.

Enjoy.

Over to the Angelika Kauffmann Hall, Schwarzenberg Austria during the 2011 Schubertiade Festival for a recital by British Piano virtuoso Paul Lewis in a program of, you guessed it, Schubert.

The concert was recorded by Radio France Musique on June 19, 2011. And for you note takers:

Schwarzenberg : Récital Paul Lewis, Piano

Franz Schubert

Valses Op.18 D.145 (1815, 1821)

Schubertiade

The almost 90 minute concert is broken up between two players. The announcements are in French and somebody in Master Control forgot to flip the switch, so the first part of the concert is in Mono and the second half is in Stereo.

I know. You'd think . . . .

Still, France Musique runs two of these concerts a day and most of them are live-as-it-happens and off-the-cuff. So you can't really blame them for spacing out every now and then.

Besides, it's Anti-Road Rage Wednesday.

Live and direct tonight from Paris at the Salle Pleyel, a concert with Orchestre de Paris conducted by Paavo Jarvi and featuring a return engagement by Canadian keyboard whiz Jan Lisiecki in music of Berlioz, Chopin and Beethoven.

The concert was recorded live earlier today (September 14th) by Radio France Musique and features a lot of familiar, if not potboiler, material. Berlioz: Le Corsair Overture followed by the Chopin First Piano concerto (and several encores) and ending up with the ever-popular 5th Symphony of Beethoven.

Classical music for people who may be getting their feet wet with classical music, put together by a great little band and a soloist on the rise. Can't ask for better.

The concert is broken up between two players - the top player features the Berlioz and Chopin (and encores) and the bottom player features the Beethoven all to itself.

Notes:

mercredi 14 septembre 2011
En direct de la Salle Pleyel : Berlioz, Chopin, Beethoven

Hector Berlioz
Le corsaire, Ouverture Op.21 (1844)

Frédéric Chopin
Concerto N°1 en Mi mineur Op.11 (1830)

Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphonie n°5 en Ut mineur Op.67 (1807,1808)

Jan Lisiecki, Piano
Orchestre de Paris
Paavo Järvi, Direction

You can whistle along to this one if you want.
