Amid fears the Republican Party of 1964 was taking a sharp turn to the right, with the rise in popularity of Barry Goldwater, and all indications pointing to his nomination as the Republican Presidential candidate, much attention was being paid on that election year to the outcome of the Republican Governor's Conference, being held in Cleveland Ohio in June, 1964.

And it was the current state of the Republican Party in 1964 that was the topic of conversation on this episode of Meet The Press, first aired on June 7, 1964.

Interviewed were the Chairman of the Conference, Kansas Governor John Anderson and Host of the Conference, Ohio Governor James Rhodes. A number of subjects were discussed - where candidate William Scranton figured in this picture, the Rockefeller wing of the Party - how other Governor's were feeling about the current climate.

Interesting sets of questions and interesting answers, as was always the case in this early incarnation of Meet The Press.

Here is that entire program.

On September 8, 1980 They Were Thinking About John Anderson

On this day in 1980 there were 53 days left before the Presidential election. Independent Candidate John Anderson was getting endorsements, most notably from the Liberal Party. He was riding a wave of discontent over high unemployment and the Recession.

John Anderson: “You don’t fight inflation by throwing men and women out of work. What you try to do is build a stronger industrial base.”

Jimmy Carter was losing endorsements. The big question was whether or not Anderson would join in the debates. Meanwhile, Candidate Reagan promised to reveal his economic plans in an address later on in the day. The Emmy's were a dramatic no-show of actors because of the SAG strike. Poland was still striking. The Recession was still going on, The Middle-East was still in the midst of negotiations. And the school busing issue was heading to the Supreme Court.

So here is a sampling of three newscasts from September 8, 1980, including an interesting Newsbreak segment from Charles Osgood where he talks about the recent incident involving Cuban Boat People and our seeming ambivalence towards plight and horror.

Interesting day - but then, most are in retrospect.

And August 19, 1980 Sounded A Lot Like This . . .

August 19, 1980 - dog days of summer and all. Still, there were the Senate Hearings on Billy Carter's relationship with the Libyans, the strikes that started in the Gdasnk Shipyards in Poland were spreading all over the country and everyone was being cautious. The 1980 Presidential Election season was going full-blast and third Party Candidate Rep. John Anderson was busy taking pot-shots at Reagan and Carter.

Rep. John Anderson: “I have suggested, and I am trying to be as frank and honest with you this morning, that I clearly believe that the nominee of the one so-called Major Party, the Republican Party, could take us in the wrong direction. But let me be impartial in my criticism and say that I think the man who was just re-nominated by the Democratic Party, President Carter has simply taken us in circles.”

And the most high-tech thing being pushed in the marketplace was Smith-Corona.
