Fifty years ago this week (starting tomorrow), Berliners were waking up to the sound of tanks, bricks and construction workers all on the Eastern side of the city, constructing a wall designed to keep that side of Germany under Soviet occupation all to itself.

Dubbed The Wall Of Shame for years, it symbolized everything the Cold War stood for until the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Wall.

A lot has been written and reported about it from that August day until now. Here is a short clip of how it was received by Western media on the morning of August 13th, 1961. Fifty years ago.
