Since we're gearing up for the final sprint towards the 2010 Mid-Terms, I thought I would start running some documentaries on past mid-term elections, starting with 1950. It seems then, as now, mud-slinging was an acknowledged art form and one eagerly employed by most candidates. The names have changed, the universal enemy (back then it was Communism) has changed, but the innuendos, sleights and counter-charges are all still there.

This documentary, part of CBS Radio's Report To The Nation series airing on November 9, 1950, is narrated by Edward R. Murrow who gives his usual astute assessment:

Edward R. Murrow: “Those who failed to vote, and deplore the outcome may recall George Jean Nathan’s statement that bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote.”

Sixty years later that sentiment still applies.

This is not the first time a party out of power has tried to obstruct the party in the whitehouse and in congress from getting things done. Andrew Jackson's people did the same thing so Jackson would be elected in 1828. They called John Quincy Adams all types of names and lied about his record and his appointments. He was soundly defeated by a man who, like Bush II promptly forgot what the constitution stood for by ignoring what he did not like about it.

“Those who failed to vote, and deplore the outcome may recall George G. Nathan’s statement that bad officials are elected by good citizens who do vote, but for 3rd party candidates.”

aren't you just holier than everybody! Did you move to Grayson's district to support him or was that just a coincidence. Do you want extra credit for that coincidence? Everyone else just votes for people they despise don't they? They must if they disagree with you.

Don't bother. Any vote I cast won't be for a Quisling, Obama-bot or Blue-Dog Democrat. When they remember "who brung you to the dance," then we'll have something to talk about. But until then, nope.

I thought a few million other people with differing opinions might have helped him along. did you tell him when you took him to the dance that he was your bitch?

I fixed it. Thanks! I need a new brain. I have one. It's a bit old.

Eight years of boosh bungling our economy, our foreign situation, our constitution and rights.

He appoints john roberts and samuel alito jr, conservative activists, to the "supreme court" who are mangling our legal precedence and will likely be with us for decades.

And then with the other conservative activists, this "supreme court" basically gave our entire electoral system to the highest bidder, squelching free speech in the name of free speech.

And yet there's not a dime's worth of difference between candidates

So vote for the guy who has no realistic chance of winning, especially now with our current supreme court.

Here's a scary thought, had Gore become president in 2000, we'd likely have a president liebermann now.

We might not be at war with Iraq or Afghanistan, but probably with Iran.
