November 12, 1979 - The Hits Just Keep On Comin'!

(November 12, 1979 - Getting a bit testy all around)
As the hostage drama continued to unfold (still at over 60 sitting in the Embassy in Tehran), Jimmy Carter started imposing sanctions on the Iranians, to not much success.
Jimmy Carter: “I am ordering that we discontinue purchasing of any oil from Iran for delivery to this country."
Making matters worse, demonstrations were popping up at college campuses all over, especially in Los Angeles, where Iranian students demonstrated in support of the hostage takers and the anti-Iranian crowd started making their presence felt.
All in all, it was clearly not going to be solved any time soon, and situations only made a bad situation worse.
And there was that added bonus of Ronald Reagan declaring his candidacy for President - to be official the next day.
Interesting coincidence, that.
Here is an excerpt of the day, as heard over KNX in Los Angeles

I remember back then smoking sinsemellan, laced with hashish through a bong, followed by 3/4 of a gram of coke, but I had to avoid Dr. Pepper. The doctor on base said they were bad for me.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
that scenario: "See, I like getting high with pot.... but that is just not enough, I want to have my heart palpitating at 100bpm to take up the tachicardia that ensues with the MJ... and then I want to mellow it down withsome hash"
Man, I can't believe this country must have been really cool at some point. All the fun was had well before my time....*sigh*
Yeah. I was never enough of a ditz to get into coke (makes you hyper, paranoid AND broke - gimme some o' dat!), but the weed culture was quite grand. I think I miss the Thai sticks most of all. Those golden sticky wands of bliss - $15 a pop and they were so smoooooth. *sigh*
There's always free cheddar in the mousetrap, baby. - Tom Waits
Interesting coincidence, that.
As was the presence of Oliver North in the unit that carried out the botched helicopter rescue raid.

Not to mention the timing of the hostages' release.
Right-ringers of all stripes are in it to stick it to the rest of us. Religions and economic systems are simply the tools of the trade.
Exactly 1 year to the date of the Presidential election. This thing had Republican dirty tricks written all over it from the start. And it didn't help that Ted Koppel was on TV every night with his counting show named "America in Crisis". No we weren't, but it just ramped up the fear factor.
I remember Xmas that year with my great-aunt. Her brother-in-law was a mercenary Bell helicopter instructor turned hostage in Iran. His postcard arrived in time for him to tell us what great progress they were making with the country. Whether it is Iran or Iraq or Afghanistan there are always people who will tell you what great progress we are making and because they are "boots on the ground" there are fools who think that is reason enough to believe them.
that all of the students at ASU jumped on.
We had lots of Iranian students there at the time.
No one knew of 'Blowback'...or the history of Mossedegh...the Shah, SAVAK, BP, or John Foster and Allen Dulles.
Of course Ron Paul wasn't around to speak of it...
