On September 25, 1959 Khrushchev Paid Ike A Visit
On this day, fifty-one years ago an attempt at a thaw in the Cold War was taking place in Washington with the visit of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to the U.S.
This was the famous visit that took Khrushchev across the U.S. on a whirlwind tour which included the infamous barring of his visit to Disneyland by the staunchly anti-Communist Walt Disney. All in all, a noteworthy and somewhat bizarre appearance by the Soviet Premier and one which was to be reciprocated by Eisenhower, had the U-2 incident not flared up the following year.
This report, a daily capsule rundown of the activities of the Premier's visit, was broadcast in the afternoon of September 25th.
In 1959 things were hopeful in September. A year later, the hope evaporated.
