FDR: Welcoming The Hatred

With the endless drone of hate and vitriol spilling out of last weeks CPAC cabal, it's comforting (somewhat) to realize the amped-up hysteria and whining is just what history does, and does over and over. It's never civilized, it's never constructive and it is always based on fear and paranoia.
So it's mild comfort to know another President faced pretty much the same barrage. President Roosevelt faced familiar taunts and similar paranoid rants during his re-election campaign in 1936.
Here is an excerpt from the now-famous Madison Square Garden address of October 31, 1936.
"“We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace — business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering. ... Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me. And I welcome their hatred!"

We have nothing to fear from the (R)ushpublicans, but fear itself.
I guess neocons are now oxycons with their limbaugh leadership. Republicans like the rush.
This is not my father's America
So you'll trust Obama if he has to go behind our backs and guide us into another unpopular war?
Afghanistan (and now Pakistan too due to the complete in-ability of Bush to regulate and manage a bad situation) was WHERE THE ENEMY WAS.
Afghanistan is where we SHOULD HAVE FOUGHT Bush's "War on Terror" after 9/11.
Now, Afghanistan is just the first big priority MESS in foreign relations after Iraq that was left to Obama after Bush screwed everything up... and, YES, I will continue to BLAME BUSH even if Obama doesn't say it out loud.
do some research on the "official story" regarding 9/11 -you'll find more holes than you'll find in a swiss cheese factory.
you're responsible for your own education.
when you realize it all doesn't add up, you realize we have no business in afghanistan, unless by "business" you mean overseeing their cash crop, and building a pipeline to the caspian sea.
I've read some of the "history" you've been dropping around here,so it doesn't surprise me that you'd tout evidence-free paranoid theory as fact.
You should research the status of those pipelines. They were never close to going forward, and they never will be until the route from Turkmenistan, through Afghanistan and the Khyber Pass, then through Pakistan is completely secure- and that will NEVER happen. And if you don't think the US government and military haven't been aware that this is a fucking impossible scenario...you need your head checked.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
thanks for your comment. i'm just trying to get people to talk about different possibilities of why we're there, other than the propaganda we've been spoon-fed.
as for refuting my "evidence free theories", it may be helpful if you'd post some links of your own.
i wish orangutan was here -that dude's got a ton of links he could drop on you regarding the planning of afghanistan going on long before 9/11 -i just forgot to bookmark them last time.
and i absolutely stand by my position that we have been thoroughly lied to be elements of our government regarding 9/11, and that if the underlying rationale for being in afghanistan is a lie, america has no business being there.
my only problem is we all know that "everything on the internet is true" um no it's not it's a lively forum of thought and debate, postulates and theories, but as we know the truth seems to be oh so elusive
is more open debate and discussion, and less censorship of difficult issues. i think that's already beginning to happen, everywhere.
Hoss yer spot on. A pipeline the Taliban in '98 told CEO Cheney of Halliburton NO! we'll do business with the Germans, French, Russians and Chinese. At least THEY don't want to own the country . . . .
And so we invaded Afghanistan allegedly in pursuit of Bin Laden, a Freedom Fighter we helped train along with the others when Father Reagan saved the world from communism.
Resources and distribution points and lines . . . it's what's for breakfast. Still. It is SO not about The Taliban, Terror, Bin Laden or anything else.
i apologize if i sounded remotely condescending.
i think a better line would have been, "we are ALL responsible for our own educations."
Sometimes FEAR conquers HOPE.
Only if it's allowed to.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
is there another war that i don't know about? i know about the war(s)/occupations in iraq and afghanistan that BUSH/neoconS got us into before Obama got into office.
The latest talking point which is all the rage among the concern troll population is that...
FDR was so cunning that he was able to force Japan and Germany into starting WWII using his super liberal powers.
Thus allowing the US to enter WWII. A war was obviously the only way FDR was able to save face, since the new deal was obviously a total bust right from its inception...
wow i need to hit the books or talk to the hitler youth. i thought we got into the great war when that big boat was sunk by the germans.
Even though the Germans declared war on us, Pat Bucannon has often said the US should have stayed out of the war in Europe. Of course Pat is a Holocaust deniar, so such explains why he didn't think the Nazis needed to be stopped....
He wanted the US to be Nazi, too, and the LEADER of that failed coup attempt was none other than Prescott Bush who made his fortune selling those ovens to Hitler. People don't realize how much LOVE the rich had/still have for FACISM!! That is who KingBush was, really.
i think you'll find most folks around here are fans of FDR, most folks here consider him one of our best presidents, and none of us take the side of the krauts or the japs in ww2!
now, i don't know all the details behind pearl harbor; i've read a pretty compelling post from someone here a while back who said it wasn't "allowed" to happen. i wish i could remember this person's name, and all the points he brought up.
i do know general smedley butler, who is said to have been the man who thwarted the early 30's fascist "business plot" to overthrow FDR, went to his bed convinced ALL wars are rackets. he even wrote a book about it.
we'll never know what butler would have said about ww2, since he died in 1940.
i will say that given what we've laerned in recent years about everything from the sinking of the lusitania to the attack on the u.s.s. liberty to the gulf of tonkin incident, wars do seem to usually be rackets.
and i do know that even the most basic research into the events of 9/11 reveals some very, very glaring inconsistencies with the "official report" (which it's commissioners say was set up to fail -thanks, phil zelikow). that's just to put it mildly, but that will be a topic for another thread...
He also had to deal with an alleged Right Wing Coup: the so-called 'Business Plot' of 1934. Obama should consider that possibility: after the Clinton impeachment and the 2000 election, it's clear that the conservatives have nothing but contempt for democracy.
Wasn't a certain William Prescott Bush involved in that?
Why isn't THAT shit ALL OVER THE NEWS?
It's astounding the level of hatred Republicans feel for FDR- Granted, he made some errors- some unforgivable, like the imprisonment of Japanese Americans- But regarding the economy, what would the Republican alternatibe have been to FDR's New Deal?
My grandmother told me FDR literally saved her (and my) family...
How's that worse than Nixon incarcerating millions of pot smokers, demonstrators, journalists, etc., in the 60s & 70s? Because race wasn't necessarily involved?
He's the living proof that what they believe is wrong. The market isn't always right. Big government can be effective. Unions are good for workers. They not only hate him, they lie about him. They've twisted the facts to "prove" he was a failure.
This FDR cartoon is also a classic:
http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/cartoonamerica/im...
History repeats itself. With very little editing, this cartoon could run today. Same theme, different faces.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay stay the same.
FDR had to move quickly after the paralysis of HOOVER. he started the SEC, wagner Act to allow workers to raise wages through union collective bargaining, social security whicj JOHN mccain collects from, civil administration.......unemployment reduced at a slow pace. fdr's opposition did NOT wan to spend when that was what was needed. it took two presidents and 12 yrs. to overcome the great Depession. i think Obama has learned something from this that fiscal prudence over urgent need to think big can be a real prolonged problem.
CPAC is over? You would not know it if you wasted your time watching MSM.
Well since CPAC is over then the GOP leadership can get back to doing what they do best............sitting in the back bench making fart noises and showing each other their peepees.
'Talk to the hand'
others from that era that championed trust busting laws and unions.
I remember cartoons like that from my history books, and they are as appropriate now, as they were then.
how many assassination attempts were there on FDR's life?
Some stuff you can't make up!
And I have NO friggin idea.
In 1933 an assassination attempt was made on FDR in Miami. The mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermack was killed and four others wounded, but FDR wasn't hit.
Cermak, not FDR, was the assassin's target.
Cermak was corrupt and had lots of enemies.
It seems that I've heard that before. I think the first time I read about it, it was in a book called "Bloodletters and Badmen" and it was said that FDR wasn't the target.
Thanks
but i have read that prescott bush was one of the ringleaders in the early 30's fascist "business plot" to overthrow FDR.
i DO know the 2 weren't "friends"; FDR eventually shut prescott bush down for helping the nazis.
Except Teddy Roosevelt(Lincoln was really a Democrat. Nothing about him was Republican. Today's Republican party would have kicked him out). The Jim Crow Party can either drastically change or fucking die.
BTW, great speech by FDR.
Obama, not so much.
....the right-wingers on Larry King last night, The New Deal was a complete failure.
History re-written while-u-wait, courtesy of Republicans.
I just love the colors on this comment page. The tan and the light blue are pleasant to look at, especially this early in the day.
Okay, now down to business. Obama has everyone on the right pissed at him and some on the far left are kinda pissed too, so I would say he must be doing something right.
FDR was before my time and sadly I didn't pay that much attention in American History classes, but I do recall that my parents spoke possitively of him.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
haveing lived in FDRS time we remember him with great respect, FDR was a realist and he knew that he had to save the britts, without england as a base for reclaiming europe the comeing war america was sure to be involved in would have been impossible to have won, and yes he did setthe japs up to get america into the fight in europe as americans were discussted with the europeans after ww1 and wanted no part in another war there , at that period in time the depression rooseveldt started building defence plants for the weapons that england and russia needed to defend thierselves with , japan threw in thier lot with the germans and FDR and the joint chiefs of staff knew war with japan could take us into war with germany , and they made thier plans accordinaly , we built up our forces in the phillipines so that when japan did attack us our fleet in pearl harbor would come to the rescue and destroy the jap navy therby we would kill two birds with one stone , the plan was called ORANGE but the japanese outsmarted us and went after the fleet at pearl, had the japs followed thru with thier attack on pearl and destroyed the ships repair facilitys and oil docks and especially the submarine pens we would have been hurting worse then we were , as it was the oil and rubber imbargo forced on japan did the trick we declared war on both germany and japan, yes germany declared war on us first because they had the tri partite pact with japan, hitler wasnt ready to fight against us but shike happens , nothings changed we still set up the wars we crave , hence iraq and afganistan! the militarys got to eat too!morning froggy!
... I see that the old cartoon was doing the usual "we'll hide FDR's disability from the public" bit.
Up on two legs, eh?
what is this world coming to when you can't define a crippled person by his disability and not by his actions!
yes few americans knew FDR was crippled by polio, and because most people only saw fdr on the news reels at the theaters he created the illusion he was able to function as he was before he contacted that disease, as far as americans were concerned thier was no greater president ever, and though he had his faults i think he made the right choices most of the time, i was 7 on the day the japanes attacked pearl and im sure he was as shocked as anybody was that the jap navy made it to pearl harbor when he expected the attack to happen in the phillipines, most folks dont know that a germen sub sank an american destroyer even before the war began it was the rubin james and many sailors died , but it was not the beginning of the war! fdr lend least over a hundread ww1 destroyers to the britts im sure they believed the rubin james was one of thoes tin cans!
why were the american japanese citizens interned in camps much like prisoner of war facilitys? it was pure propaganda orintated, much like the slogan of the day , we had to remember pearl harbor you have to whip up the old hatered for the enemy keep the war fever going even if you have to take away americans civil rights to do it, hence the fisa bill the patriot act repeal of habius corpous free speach zones ,internment of citizens who supposedly were protected by the constitution, welcome to the new illusion of democracy ! and now you can make all the excuses you prefer for obamas continuied war on the iraqys and afganistan!
and since we are in a depression as back when fdr was president i have to say we are not going to regain our prosparity thru war as we did back then, the wpa was a helping hand but would have fizzeld out if we had not been involved in ww2, unlike today our jobs kept going after that war because we had destroyed much of the worlds infrastructure and the new jobs were depending on rebuilding europes depleted facilitys, we have been sold out by our corporations now and the future looks bleak our factorys have been turned into sub divisons parking lots they sold off your clothing manufactureing the steel factorys they bought up your farm lands control your fuel your heating and electricty plants they now own you more then any government from the past , thiers no FDR left to save you and your politicians have been payed off to betray you , good luck your going to need it!
that the American people saw through the Bullshit once before, it gives me hope we can do it again.
It's especially poignant to visit his memorial in D.C.
One of our greatest presidents.
Way to tell 'em off, Franklin!
Sadly, for most people, these days, history is what happened last week.
far left loon >.<

thnx mwing
History repeats.
If only we had a leader this courageous now.
FDR: Useless legs, incredible balls!
