With donations trickling in today, we're almost at the 30% mark. We still have a ways to go before I can make the bills. But thanks to you, and to your friends and the people you've told about Newstalgia to, we're slowly getting there. Many thanks to all of you who have donated and left kind words. I'm here because you're here, and I'll keep being here as long as I can, hopefully bringing you sounds you may not be familiar with or have forgotten all about. So whatever you can do, whatever you can donate - there is no sum too small that doesn't help chip away at this crisis. We can make it. My deepest appreciation to you all.

The name Florent Schmitt doesn't ring many bells these days. A prolific composer and respected critic, Schmitt composed some 150 works, ranging from instrumental and chamber pieces to Ballets and Orchestral works.

But out of that 150 compositions, only a tiny fraction have ever been recorded, let alone performed, since their premiers.

While still tackling the mountain of French Radio transcriptions from the 1940's and 1950's, I ran across Oriane et le Prince d'amour, which I don't think has ever been recorded commercially. This performance comes by way of a broadcast concert given by The French National Orchestra, conducted by the legendary Jean Martinon. Since none of these transcriptions have recording dates on them, my best guess is it comes from the 1956-1957 period.

Someone else you may not be familiar with, or someone you are, but may not be familiar with this piece.

In any case, enjoy and (cross fingers) we'll be back next week.

I always talk about how many concerts are broadcast any given day by the radio networks in Europe, and how many of them are live on-the-spot. Well, to prove that point, here is a concert that was recorded lived earlier today (8:00 pm Paris time - 11:00 am Los Angeles time) featuring Orchestre National de France led by podium superstar Daniele Gatti and featuring Antonio Meneses, cello in music by Faure`, Saint-Saens, Debussy and Ravel.

Both the orchestra and soloist are given rousing ovations and, as is customary, they play rousing encores.

Great concert all the way around, and to hear it live as-it's-happening is a bonus.

The concert is divided between two players and the intermission feature has been edited out (no interviews, just commercial recordings featuring Meneses) and the announcements have been edited down in order to take the concert down from its original three hours to a reasonable length.

Here's what's being played:

Part 1 - Gabriel Fauré

Pelléas et Mélisande, Musique de scène pour la pièce de Maeterlinck(1902)

Camille Saint-Saëns

Concerto N°1 en la mineur Op.33 (1869)

Part 2 - Claude Debussy

Jeux (1912)

Maurice Ravel

Daphnis et Chloé, Suite N°2 (1913)

Antonio Meneses, Violoncelle
Orchestre National de France
Daniele Gatti, Direction

Who says music is dead? Not around here.

Remember, it's Anti-Road Rage Wednesday so step away from the computer and turn the speakers up.

And enjoy.

Over to Paris this week for a concert live and direct from the Theatre du Chatelet with Orchestre National de France, guest conducted by David Zinman and featuring the Georgian violin sensation Lisa Batiashvili in a concert of music by Charles Ives, Samuel Barber, Michael Torke and Igor Stravinsky. All recorded live and direct from the stage by Radio France Musique on October 20th.

Batisashvili plays the Barber Violin Concerto - promptly brings down the house and comes back to add some Bach for an encore. A great concert all the way around and the French seem to be having a really nice time with Charles Ives.

As always, the concert is broken up between two players - the top player features the Ives, Barber and Torke. And the bottom player features the Stravinsky.

Perfect Anti-road Rage Wednesday material.

Here's the program:

Staying in Paris this week with another concert by Orchestre National de France, this time conducted by Daniele Gatti and featuring Pianist David Fray in the Schoenberg Piano Concerto (1942). Starting off with Wagner's Siegfried Idyll and continuing with Debussy's Nocturne's after the Schoenberg and finishing up with Wagner again, this time the Good Friday Spell from Parsifal. All together a pretty good and well-received concert with a Bach encore from Fray.

The concert is broken up on to two players. The top player features the Wagner and Schoenberg and the bottom player features the Debussy and Wagner Parsifal.

Back over to Paris this week for a live and direct from Musee d'Orsay in Paris just yesterday (June 21), a concert featuring Orchestre National de France guest conducted by the venerable Kurt Masur.

It's a short concert at a little under an hour and part of a larger celebration, and some of it may sound a bit strange. Featured is L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) by Paul Dukas and a 1954 arrangement by Sergei Gortchakov of Moussorgski's Pictures at an Exhibition, which I thought was a little tedious for such an otherwise dynamic piece. But you get to hear it and make up your own mind. Pay no attention to me.

For you note takers:

mardi 21 juin 2011

Announcements are in French and I've edited them down because it was live and on-the-fly and there was a lot of padding.

Just in time for your anti-Road Rage Wednesday. Don't thank me - thank Radio France.

A concert from two years ago, recorded by Radio France Musique featuring Orchestre National de France conducted by the legendary Sir Colin Davis and featuring Mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch in a program of music by Berlioz.

Here are the notes:

Opéra Comique : Hector Berlioz

Hector Berlioz

Sophie Koch, Mezzo-soprano*

Sabine Toutain, Alto**

Orchestre National de France

Sir Colin Davis, Direction

Concert donné le 5 novembre 2009

A little under 90 minutes, I broke the concert up between two players - the top player features the Waverley Overture and Les Nuits d'ete and the bottom player features Harold In Italy.

A wonderful concert, beautifully recorded by the Radio France engineers. Further evidence hearing music live works wonders.

Enjoy and remember it's Anti-Road Rage Wednesday . . .in case you needed reminding.
