Stupid Parent Tricks, Southern States Edition
October 25, 2014

Via Reddit, the story of what happens when conservative parents discover they didn't raise a robot.

Just a quick background to set the scene.. I'm a male in my early 20s. I live at home with my parents and commute to school. I'm currently unemployed (very hard to find work in my area). I live in the southern United States - a red state.

So the midterm elections are near so I decided to vote early with my family. It was me, my parents, and two siblings. All of us are adults and doing our own thing, so it's very rare for all us to be in the same car together. The ride to the polling place wasn't too bad, but when the topic of who we planned on voting for came up I chose to stay silent. My family is extremely conservative and well.. I'm not. When we arrived there weren't any lines (Yay early voting!) so we were in and out in just a few minutes.

On the car ride back, they all started talking about who they voted for while I remained silent. My dad started to notice this so he asked me who I voted for directly. This was the second time I voted, the first time I had to lie about who I voted for. This time I decided to tell the truth. I've had to hide my views and beliefs from my parents for a long time because I knew they wouldn't react well if I told them. It turns out I was right. They didn't react well at all. When I told my dad who I voted for, he thought I was joking. When I told him I was being serious, I could see his face turn red through the rear view mirror. He lost his shit. He began to hurl a number of insults at me and I just sat there and took it. No one came to my defense, they just sat there and stared outside their windows. Occasionally one of them would chime in with a comment that would reinforce what my dad was saying. I tried to keep calm for a while, trying my hardest to explain my point of view without trying to offend him and throw more fuel on the fire. But as the insults kept coming, so did my patience. Eventually he said something along the lines of "a vote for a Democrat is a vote against God." This was a terrible time to tell him that I was also an atheist. When we got home I was told to pack up my shit and get out.

So was it the atheism or the vote for a Democrat that sent Dad into orbit? Whatever the trigger, letting your politics destroy your family is a terrible idea, particularly if you call yourself a 'family values' voter.

Also? This kid has no car because he sold it to help out his parents a few months back when they needed money. Ah, gotta love the ones with 'real' family values. Mom and Dad, you can go back to watching Fox now. Your work is done.
