GOP Convention Speaker Lineup Includes An Opening Night Hatefest
July 14, 2016

Hold the presses! The speakers for the Republican National Convention have been announced and boy howdy, is it ever going to be a hellfeast.

The New York Times has the list:

Night 1: A Benghazi focus, followed by border patrol agents and Mr. Shaw, whose son was killed by an undocumented immigrant. Senator Cotton, Mr. Giuliani, Melania Trump, Ms. Ernst and others.

Night 2: A focus on the economy: Mr. White, president of the U.F.C.; Asa Hutchinson, the governor of Arkansas; Michael Mukasey, the former United States attorney general; Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, a vice-presidential possibility; Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader; Tiffany Trump; Donald Trump Jr. and Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

Night 3: Ms. Bondi; Ms. Collins; Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker; Senator Ted Cruz of Texas; Eric Trump; Ms. Gulbis; and the nominee for vice president.

Night 4: Mr. Tebow; Representative Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee; Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma; Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman; Gov. Rick Scott of Florida; Mr. (Peter) Thiel; Mr. Barrack; Ivanka Trump; Donald J. Trump.

A few observations are in order.

  • As others noted on Twitter last night, the Republican Party is prioritizing Benghazi over the economy. That is utterly bizarre.
  • Notice the lineup for night 1, where we have a veritable hatefest brewing. You cannot look at that list without concluding that it is nothing more than an invitation for delegates to express their utter hate for anyone who isn't white and Christian?
  • Night 3 is the night where they plan to discuss former President Bill Clinton's sexual exploits while in office. No, really.
  • Night 4 is Christian Tea Party night, right up until Trump is nominated. But do you recall a Republican convention where a billionaire who spends his billions putting sites like Gawker into bankruptcy while bankrolling the likes of Breitbart has a speaking slot at the convention? Even the Kochs didn't score like that.

The Times reports in that same article that at the same time they're putting this lineup together, the Trump campaign is trying to stave off two separate delegate revolts. My advice to the GOP? Don't bother. Just go with the fascist so the American people can put you away for good.

There is only one conclusion to take from this: They've got nothing for Americans but hate. No policy ideas, no innovation, just nothing but hate.

I'm glad they go first, because Democrats are going to show this country how it's done. We may have had a hotly-contested primary, but it was on policy and promise, not hate.
