The family of Brian Sicknick told MSNBC why they decided to make a very powerful statement by refusing to shake hands with Republican leaders after receiving the Congressional Gold Medal.

Report Garrett Haake talked with the family.

"We got together and said we're not going to shake their hands," they explained. “And now McCarthy is going to investigate the committee that investigated January 6th?”

Haake reported that these families are furious that soon after the insurrection, Republicans bent over backwards to support Trump, including Kevin McCarthy rushing to Mar-A-Lago to beg for forgiveness.

In this tweet, Brian Sicknick's brother gives more details about their reasons not to accommodate Republican leaders at the ceremony, including the fact that Rep. Louie Gohmert awarded a flag that flew over the Capitol to a January 6th rioter.

"People like Louis Gohmert, who presented an American flag that was flown over the Capitol to January 6 rioters and told them they were patriots," he said. "It's disgusting." "Takes away everything my brother's done, the heroism my brother has shown."

"You don't think they deserve the handshake in this context?"

"No."

"Definitely not."

That says it all.
