Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his campaign manager Jesse Benton must think Kentucky voters are the stupidest in the nation. How else to explain former Rand Paul braintrust Jesse Benton, and Ron Paul National Chairman in 2012, caught on tape saying

“Between you and me, I’m sort of holding my nose for two years because what we’re doing here is going to be a big benefit to Rand in ’16, so that’s my long vision.”

..and then just brushing it off later with an "Aw shucks, I said it but I didn't mean it." McConnell and Benton later cemented their contempt by releasing the photo seen above. Buffoonery must play well in Kentucky or something.

The irony in all this: Benton was hired by McConnell in yet another cynical move to protect himself from Paul supporters and Tea Party activists.

Mitch McConnell’s campaign manager is expected to offer a remorseful take on explosive comments he made about his boss.

“He wasn’t angry, he wasn’t upset, but I could see the hurt in his eyes,” Jesse Benton is expected to say on a report airing on the Louisville, Ky., station WHAS11 News, according to tweets from political editor Joe Arnold.

Those remarks will come a day after a recording of a conversation between Benton and a conservative activist surfaced, in which Benton made deeply negative comments about McConnell (R-Ky.), the Senate minority leader who is seeking reelection in 2014 against Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes.

“Between you and me, I’m sort of holding my nose for two years because what we’re doing here is going to be a big benefit to Rand in ’16, so that’s my long vision,” he said in the recording.

Skip ahead to the 2 min mark in the video below for Benton's comments on managing McConnell's campaign. Ostensibly the phone call was made to verify a $30,000 pay-for-play endorsement of Ron Paul by an Iowa republican state official in 2012.

Benton: Are you still with that Senator?

Fusaro: I am. I am.

Benton: Good stuff, man.

Fusaro: Yeah, and I guess you are doing something else then?

Benton: I’m doing something else, man. I am, well between you and me, I’m sort of holding my nose for two years, ‘cause what we’re doing here is going to be a big benefit to Rand in 16 so. That’s my long vision. So…

Fusaro: Okay. Alright, very good. Thanks

Benton: Alright man.

Fusaro: See ya.

Benton: Mail that to me and don’t be a stranger. Call me any time.

Fusaro: Okay, will do, bye-bye.
