Any time society becomes more tolerant and inclusive, the right wing seems to erupt in protest. For example, the University of California system has decided to include different gender identities from the traditional male or female.

Anna Kooiman interviews Claire Chiara, a senior at UC Berkeley and president of the UCB Republicans. They want to know if this is progress or a problem. It's hard to imagine what the problem is, if you identify like good Republicans, as either male or female, what difference does it make if there are other choices? To understand that, you need to bring up a dog whistle of GOP fear-mongering: Affirmative Action. Chiara explains,

"Continually classifying students into smaller and smaller groups and descriptors is just going to perpetuate the spiral of affirmative action policies, where we're constantly using statistical intricacies to find under-representation that isn't even there. And secondly, I don't understand how these categories in any way reflects the identities of these applicants as students and especially students that are applying to competitive colleges."

Translated, that means, I don't require another classification, why does anybody else? Typical Republican intolerance, that's really what this is about.

Kooiman addresses the President of the U.C. System, Janet Napolitano's reasoning, which is to make students feel more inclusion and acceptance. This student in particular takes offense at the new labels because she wasn't consulted, and she wants a survey given to all students before amending classifications. She's a Republican, just giving us a preview of her life filled with all sorts of intolerance and discrimination. Claire is likely resentful of the progressive mindset of much of U.C. Berkeley. Leave it to Fox "News" to find this one in particular of the few GOP-leaning students at that famous Liberal University.
