Peter Meijer was kicked to the curb by Michigan Republicans for voting to impeach Trump in 2021, but that hasn't stopped him from throwing his hat into the ring for the open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. Meijer, the heir to a grocery chain fortune, would seem to have a lot of time on his hands these days for his quixotic run. Michigan's Republican Party hasn't forgotten though, that's for certain. They tweeted after his announcement, “Peter Meijer voted to impeach President Trump. Remember that” before deleting it, and going back to pretending to be impartial for the primary.

Meijer also said that his support of Trump will make The Lincoln Project and Never Trumpers unhappy, but I highly doubt that as Meijer has no chance of winning the Republican nomination. Republicans don't trust him, and everyone else thinks he's a joke now. "I will work with anybody that I think has the interests of the country at heart - even if they are doing it for cynical political ends," said Meijer.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Peter Meijer, a Republican who served one term in Congress before being ousted by voters following a vote to impeach then-President Donald Trump, announced Monday that he will run for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan.

Meijer joins a field of more than a dozen candidates vying for a seat that’s been held by Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow for more than two decades. Stabenow shocked many in the state in January by announcing her retirement, creating a wide open race in the battleground state.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee already said no thanks, and will presumably back Mike Rogers, also a former Republican congressman.

“Peter Meijer isn’t viable in a primary election, and there’s worry that if Meijer were nominated, the base would not be enthused in the general election,” NRSC Executive Director Jason Thielman said in a statement to POLITICO.

Despite his former view that Trump is unfit for office, Meijer claims he looks forward to working with Trump in the future.

Meijer said, despite the former president's responsibility in the Jan. 6 attacks, he could work with Trump if the latter is given a second term.

"If I was serving in the Senate under a President Trump, I would be excited about the areas where we could work together, but I would still not compromise in what I believe or on my values in any circumstance,

It must be pleasant to be so blissfully lacking in self-awareness. Because he's a Republican though, and Democrats are just evil socialists intent on destroying the country, Meijer doesn't seem to think his views are inconsistent or hypocritical.

"At this point, with the damage and destruction that the Biden administration has wrought," Meijer said, "the threats to this country are not one-dimensional, they are not one-directional. I will work with anybody that I think has the interests of the country at heart - even if they are doing it for cynical political ends. I am going to oppose folks who I think are putting us in the wrong direction."
